Liverpool given unlikely European lifeline by Kaide Gordon replacement
Melkamu Frauendorf came off the bench to earn Liverpool an unlikely point in their UEFA Youth League clash in Porto.
Frauendorf got on the end of a superb Tyler Morton pass to equalise with 10 minutes remaining as the young Reds battled to a 1-1 draw in their Group B showdown at the Estadio Municipal Jorge Sampaio on Tuesday afternoon.
The 17-year-old Germany youth international had replaced Kaide Gordon at the interval with Marc Bridge-Wilkinson’s under-19 side having been put under pressure for long periods, Porto eventually going ahead on 70 minutes through Diogo Abreu.
But Frauendorf’s leveller means Liverpool stay behind the Portuguese side on goals scored at the top of the table on four points, with AC Milan and Atletico Madrid having also drawn 1-1 in the day’s other game.
Behind Enemy Lines
Liverpool have quickly got to put the frustration of dropping two points in the Premier League on Saturday behind them because on Tuesday they travel to Porto for their second match in Group B of the Champions League.
The Reds got off to the perfect start when they beat AC Milan 3-2 at Anfield two weeks ago. And they’ll be confident of making it six points from six given they’ve had Porto’s number in recent years.
However, the Portuguese side did earn an excellent 0-0 draw at Atletico Madrid on matchday one, and like Liverpool, they’ve made an unbeaten start to the season.
So to learn more about Porto, Paul Wheelock picks up the phone to Portuguese football expert Alex Goncalves (follow him on Twitter @Aljeeves).
They talk Diogo Jota, who will be facing his former club on Tuesday, as well as Marko Grujic, who will be doing the same, plus two midfielders Liverpool were linked with in the summer, and the star forward who came close to joining Everton.
