The welterweight showdown comes as Diaz looks to end his relationship with the UFC with just one fight left on his current contract.
Diaz has not fought since June 2021 when he lost a decision to future UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards. Since then, Diaz has anxiously awaited the opportunity to test free agency but he has yet to actually secure a fight.
While it’s possible that Diaz could later re-sign with the UFC, the 37-year-old veteran has said in interviews and via social media that he plans to leave the promotion to test the open market for the first time since signing with the promotion. After winning The Ultimate Fighter Season 5 in 2007.
As for Chimaev, the unbeaten Chechen will be looking to continue his winning streak after engaging in a three-round battle with Gilbert Burns in his last outing. Khamzat Chimaev currently holds an 11-0 record in the UFC with a 5-0 resume.
Also, a women’s strawweight bout between Hannah Cifers and Melissa Martinez was expected to join at the event. However, Cifers withdrew for undisclosed reasons and was replaced by Elise Reed.
Jamie Pickett and Dennis Tullulin with middleweight bout was expected to take place at UFC on ESPN: Dos Anjos vs Fiziev, but was moved to this card for undisclosed reasons.
