American Josh Sargent has dream first start for Norwich City :Josh Sargent’s first start for Norwich City couldn’t have gone any better: The U.S. men’s national team forward scored two goals and tacked on an assist in a 6-0 win in the English League Cup (aka Carabao Cup) over AFC Bournemouth, which plays in the English second tier.

“Never a bad thing to get a couple of goals. And the team performed very well. The fans were amazing. So it was a good night,” Sargent told the Norwich City club cameras.

He scored the fourth and sixth goals of the night in the 49th and 75th minute — both on simple finishes inside the box — and those bookended an assist for his strike partner Christos Tzolis (66th minute), who also netted two goals of his own on the nigh

The 21-year-old American officially moved to Norwich City on August 10 in a reported $11 million transfer from German club Werder Bremen, which suffered relegation to the German second division last season.

Sargent has already made two 13-minute substitute appearances in the English Premier League, but the League Cup represented his first start. His debut came against Liverpool in the opening match of the Premier League season and he also entered the second match against Manchester City, but both results were well out of reach for the Canaries by the time Sargent took the field. They lost both matches by a combined 8-0 scoreline.

The League Cup second-round knockout match was held at Norwich’s home of Carrow Road and the local fans were serenading him during his standout performance. The team moves on as one of 32 teams that will be involved in third-round action the week of September 20.

Norwich City’s next Premier League match comes on Saturday at home against Leicester City. That will be followed by the international break for World Cup qualifiers, with Sargent expected to be among the names called up by U.S. national team head coach Gregg Berhalter.

The USMNT will play its first three 2022 World Cup qualifiers at El Salvador (Sept. 2), home against Canada (Sept. 5) and then at Honduras (Sept. 8). Sargent has five goals in 16 appearances with the USA in his budding career.

The St. Louis native joined Werder Bremen of the German Bundesliga in 2018 upon turning 18 years of age. He made 10 Bundesliga appearances in his first season (2018-19), mostly off the bench, before becoming a part-time starter the following season (15 starts, 13 sub appearances). He was a regular in the starting XI, scoring five goals, during the last season which saw Bremen finish second to last and suffer relegation to the second division
